26 October is also celebrated as the International Day for the Preservation of the World's Audiovisual Heritage. The day was established in 2005 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to raise awareness of the importance of preserving audiovisual heritage and promote action to protect it.
Audiovisual heritage includes a wide range of materials such as films, television programmes, radio broadcasts and sound recordings. It is a valuable part of our cultural memory and provides insight into our history, values and beliefs.
