- 1552: The Battle of Mühlberg is fought during the Schmalkaldic War, resulting in a decisive victory for the Catholic forces of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V over the Protestant forces of the Schmalkaldic League.
- 1601: Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe dies.
- 1648: The Peace of Westphalia is signed, ending the Thirty Years' War.
- 1795: Poland is partitioned for the third and final time by Austria, Prussia, and Russia.
- 1814: British forces defeated the French at the Battle of Orthez during the Peninsular War.
- 1854: The Battle of Balaclava is fought during the Crimean War, resulting in a British victory despite heavy casualties.
- 1864: The Battle of Spring Hill is fought during the American Civil War, resulting in a Union victory.

United nations day
24 October is also celebrated as United Nations Day. The day was established in 1947 by the United Nations General Assembly to commemorate the anniversary of the coming into force of the United Nations Charter in 1945.
United Nations Day is an occasion to celebrate the achievements of the United Nations and to recommit itself to its ideals of peace, security and development. It is also a day to learn more about the United Nations and its work and join its efforts to create a better world.
