  • 1781: The American Revolutionary War ends with the surrender of British General Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia.
  • 1803: The United States Senate ratified the Louisiana Purchase, doubling the country's size.
  • 1818: The Convention of 1818 was signed between the United States and the United Kingdom, establishing the 49th parallel as the border between the two countries.
  • 1912: The First Balkan War begins, in which Montenegro declares war on the Ottoman Empire.
  • 1944: American Institute of Graphic Arts was established.
  • 1962: The Cuban Missile Crisis begins, as the United States learns that the Soviet Union has nuclear missiles in Cuba.
  • 1968: The Vietnam War was banned, protests and demonstrations took place throughout the United States.
  • 1973: The Yom Kippur War begins, in which Egypt and Syria suddenly attack Israel.
  • 1986: The Iran–Contra affair is resolved, as it is revealed that the Reagan administration was secretly selling weapons to Iran and using the proceeds to fund Contra rebels in Nicaragua.
  • 2011: Libya's longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi was killed by rebel forces.


International solidarity day

20 October is also celebrated as International Solidarity Day. The day was established by the United Nations in 2005 to promote global unity and cooperation.

International Solidarity Day is an opportunity to learn about the importance of solidarity and take action to help others. It is also a day to celebrate the many ways in which people around the world are working together to create a better future for all.
