  • 1356 – Hundred Years' War: The Battle of Maupertuis is fought, resulting in an English victory.
  • 1522 – Magellan expedition: The Victoria, the only ship to survive the expedition, returns to Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Spain, completing the first circumnavigation of the globe.
  • 1775 – American Revolutionary War: The Battle of Great Bridge is fought, resulting in a victory for the American militia.
  • 1793 – Marie Antoinette, queen wife of Louis XVI, is executed during the French Revolution.
  • 1859 – John Brown leads a raid on the American armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in an attempt to arm slaves and start a rebellion.
  • 1872 - Susan B. Anthony was arrested for voting in the US presidential election.

World Food Day

16 October is also celebrated as World Food Day. The day was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1979 to raise awareness about the issue of hunger and malnutrition around the world.

 

World Food Day is an opportunity to learn about the global food crisis and take action to help solve it. It is also a day to celebrate the progress made in reducing hunger and malnutrition and to recommit ourselves to achieving the goal of a hunger-free world.

 

Global cat day

October 16 is also celebrated as Global Cat Day. The day was established by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in 2008 to raise awareness of cats and promote their welfare.

 

Global Cat Day is an opportunity to learn about the importance of cats and take action to improve their lives. It is also a day to celebrate the unique bond humans have with cats.
