- 1582 - The Gregorian calendar is adopted by Spain, Portugal and Italy.
- 1685 – King Louis XIV of France revokes the Edict of Nantes, which had granted religious freedom to Protestants.
- 1793 – Marie Antoinette, queen consort of Louis XVI, is executed during the French Revolution.
- 1815 – Napoleon Bonaparte returns to Paris after escaping from exile on Elba.
- 1823 - The Central American United Provinces gained independence from Spain.
- 1859 – John Brown leads a raid on the American armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in an attempt to arm slaves and start a rebellion.
- 1880 – Thomas Edison opens his first electric power station in New York City.
- 1917 – Mata Hari, a Dutch exotic dancer accused of spying for the Germans, was executed by a firing squad in France.
- 1926 – Erich Maria Remarque's novel All Quiet on the Western Front is published.
