  • 1492 : Christopher Columbus arrived in the Bahamas, marking the beginning of European colonization in the Americas.
  • 1582 : The Gregorian calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII. This calendar is still used today in most parts of the world.
  • 1792 : Washington, D.C. The foundation stone of the White House was laid.
  • 1821 : Costa Rica got independence from Spain.
  • 1859 : American abolitionist John Brown and his followers attacked the federal armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia.
  • 1890 : The first issue of National Geographic magazine was published.
  • 1898 : The Spanish–American War ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris, in which Spain ceded Guam, Puerto Rico and the Philippines to the United States.
  • 1915 : Edith Cavell, a British nurse, was executed by German forces for helping Allied soldiers escape from occupied Belgium.
  • 1928 : The first Acemy Awards ceremony was held in Hollywood, California.
  • 1943 : The Battle of Vella Lavella began in the Pacific theater of World War II. The battle is a decisive Allied victory, and marks the end of Japanese efforts to recapture the Solomon Islands.
  • 1953 : The Korean War ended with the signing of the armistice agreement.
  • 1960 : Fidel Castro gave his "I Have a Dream" speech at the United Nations.
  • 1968 : Summer Olympics began in Mexico City, Mexico.
  • 1981 : The AIDS epidemic was first identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
  • 1992 : Hurricane Andrew hits Florida, causing an estimated $26.5 billion in damage.
  • 2000 : USS Cole was attacked by suicide bombers in en port, Yemen. Seventeen American sailors were killed and 39 were injured.
  • 2002 : The United Nations Security Council passes Resolution 1441, which warns Iraq to comply with its disarmament obligations or face "serious consequences".
  • 2011 : Occupy Wall Street movement begins in New York City. This movement is a protest against economic inequality and corporate greed.
